Quail was born in Albany, Texas on August 27, 1941 to Acie and Avis Dobbs. When Quail graduated from high school, the “rodeo bug” had already bitten. Quail tried assorted rodeo jobs including riding bareback horses and bulls, but it was not paying off too well. One time in Buffalo MN, the barrel man didn’t show up, so Quail stepped in. And the rest is history…
In 1998 the West of the Pecos Rodeo Souvenir Program was dedicated to him. Dobbs has been honored by his peers many times as PRCA Clown of the Year, Coors’ “Man-in-the-Can” and has worked the NFR as a bullfighter and rodeo barrel man.
Quail has been chosen to work the Texas Circuit Finals several times as well as the Dodge National Circuit Finals. Quail worked rodeos in El Paso, Houston, Cheyenne, Pecos, Big Spring, Abilene and Jasper for many, many years. In December 1997, Quail made a difficult decision to leave rodeo and try something else. 1998 was Quail’s last year to rodeo full time.
